Sea Grape is an ecologically threatened bush or small tree that is native to south Florida, the Bahamas, and parts of the Caribbean. While it can grow to nearly 25 feet, it is almost never found growing more than 6 feet, especially if grown as a specimen in containers. It has broad, round green leaves, with reddish veins. The fruits are borne in clusters and hang like grapes. The fruits are green, ripening a purple color and are generally sweet. Delicious jams and jellies are often made from the grapes. Care is simple if grown in the ground, however they are nearly tropical in their requirements and do not like temperatures below 36 F degrees, though they can handle occasional freezes if they are well established. They can never tolerate freeze, only an occasional light frost if grown in containers and must be brought inside. Sea Grape has very little problems with disease or insects.

Sea Grape Plants Pollination
Sea Grape Plants are not self-fertile. You will need to plant 2 or 3 trees in close proximity or in a cluster to achieve fruiting.

Planting & Care
1. Planting: Start by selecting an adequate location for your Sea Grape. It prefers full sun, so your planting area should receive 6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day. It’s adaptable to a variety of soil types, provided they’re well-draining. Once you’ve selected a location, dig a hole that’s two or three times the width of the Sea Grape’s root ball. Then, place the plant, back fill the soil and water to settle the roots.

2. Watering: Water your Sea Grape regularly until the plant is established. We recommend watering about once a week for best results, but if you’re not sure when to water, simply check the soil about 2 to 3 inches down. If the soil is dry in this area, it’s time to water your plant.

3. Fertilizing: Fertilize your Sea Grape Bush with a well-balanced fertilizer during the growing season.

4. Pruning: Prune your Sea Grape fairly regularly to maintain shape and remove any dead branches. Sea Grapes can grow quite large if left un-pruned (upwards of 30+ft). If your space will not accommodate this size, simply prune yearly to your desired size and shape.

5. Pollination: The Sea Grape does need a nearby bush to cross-pollinate for fruit bearing, so ensure that you buy two or more trees for fruiting to occur.
